Students have been critiquing drawings and reflecting on their work in class. Really proud of all their hard work and dedication to this project. Excited to show the finished results! The Art Department would like to focus on the sketchbook work of students that have a unique talent for drawing and or an eye for design. Peidong Lin is our senior feature artist. Peidong is a senior who has been in the visual art program for his entire four years at RGHS. His immense talent comes naturally to him and his unique way of seeing and portraying his subjects is in an inspiration to his peers. We are so proud of his work and to have him in our visual arts program. His drawings have been exhibited not only in our annual visual arts show but he has also exhibited at the Queens Borough Arts Festival. He participates in our weekly sketchbook class critiques with insightful thoughts on his classmates work. Stay tuned for more exciting sketchbooks!! Students in Studio Art 1 have been studying shapes in perspective. Students were required to recreate the following shapes in their sketchbooks, Cone, Cylinder, Sphere, Pyramid, Cube. After students have drawn these shapes in their sketchbooks they were asked to come up with a light source. Using artist samples their table as a reference point students where able to decide where the light and shadow was coming from and they recreated their drawings based on these samples and drawing from direct observation. This is the second year that the Art Department has had a partnership with the Museum of Modern Art. Students in Portfolio Art are selected to work collaboratively with Museum of Modern Art Educator Nathan Sensel. Mr. Sensel visited Robert Goddard HS and introduced students to artists that explored the theme of identity and social issues. This past week students went on tours of specific galleries at the MOMA along with Mr. Sensel and another museum educator. They saw various works of art by Contemporary Modern Arts and Master Artists. Student studies masterworks of artists that explored the themes of identity and social issues. As a follow up Mr. Sensel returned to Goddard to complete a printmaking art piece with the class. The students created a symbol that represented them and then made prints of that symbol. The results were fantastic! Here is Link to MOMA's site for resources and other valuable art information. http://www.moma.org/
Portfolio Art students were required to set up their own Still life in class. They arranged their materials however they choose and then focused on taking pictures of the different views of their Still Life. Students are currently working on watercolor techniques and strong compositions of their Still Lives. We went to the Museum of Modern art and look at Master Artists. Some of the artists that we looked at are Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne. For our shared bulletin board the art department asked students to write about what makes the arts so important. Here's what the visual art students had to say!
Unit 1: Preliminary Work: Students were introduced to the Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Value, Form, Texture and Color. They were required to create value charts to show gradation of Pencil Pressure and Gradation of Color. After studying Master Artists like Kandinsky, students then recreated their own small abstract drawing. These drawings had to include the Elements of Art that were created in their Value Chart Studies.
